Privacy Policy for Unread Gmail

Last Updated: November 2025

Introduction

Unread Gmail ("I", "my", or "the extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the extension collects, uses, and safeguards your information when you use this Chrome extension.

Data Collection and Use

Gmail Data

The extension accesses your Gmail account through Google's Gmail API to provide its core functionality:

  • Read Access: The extension accesses your unread emails to display them in the extension interface
  • Modify Access: The extension archives, deletes, marks as read/unread, and manages labels on your emails when you request these actions
  • Settings Access: The extension creates filters in your Gmail account when you use the filter creation feature

All Gmail data is accessed directly through Google's secure API and is never transmitted to external servers or any third-party services.

Local Storage

The extension stores the following data locally on your device using Chrome's local storage API:

  • Unread Email Count: The current count of unread emails (used to display the badge and detect new emails)
  • Previous Unread Count: The previous unread count (used to detect when new emails arrive and trigger notifications)
  • OAuth Access Token: Your Google OAuth access token (stored securely by Chrome's identity API)

This data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to external servers.

Authentication

The extension uses Google OAuth 2.0 for authentication. When you authorize the extension:

  • You grant permission to access your Gmail account
  • An access token is stored locally on your device
  • The token is used only to make API requests to Google's Gmail API
  • You can revoke access at any time through your Google Account settings

Data Sharing

The extension does not share, sell, or transmit your data to any third parties. The extension only communicates with:

  • Google Gmail API: To fetch and manage your emails (this is the only external service the extension communicates with)

Data Security

  • All communication with Google's Gmail API is encrypted using HTTPS
  • Access tokens are stored securely using Chrome's built-in identity and storage APIs
  • No email content or personal information is stored on external servers
  • All data processing occurs locally on your device

User Rights

You have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Access: You can view all data stored by the extension through Chrome's extension storage
  • Deletion: You can remove the extension at any time, which will delete all locally stored data
  • Revocation: You can revoke the extension's access to your Gmail account at any time through your Google Account Security Settings
  • Control: You control what actions the extension performs on your emails (archive, delete, etc.)

Permissions Explained

The extension requires the following permissions:

  • identity: Used for OAuth authentication with Google
  • storage: Used to store unread count and preferences locally on your device
  • alarms: Used to periodically update the unread count badge
  • notifications: Used to display notifications when new emails arrive (if enabled)
  • scripting: Used to inject scripts for enhanced functionality
  • offscreen: Used for background processing
